The Pettee Block was built about 1895 by George
Whitcher, and sold to Dean Pettee. It was occupied by Edgerley's
Store, Ham's Market, Grant's Restaurant, the Fire Department's
hose wagon, and the upper three floors were student rooms.
The Block burned February 1924, in spite of help from the
Dover and Newmarket Fire Departments.

This was the Town Jail, but little is known
of its history. This is "Smiles" Leavitt 1921
standing in the doorway, when the building was in disrepair.
The Palmer boys kept their live skunks in it in its last
days, till the season was right for good skins. It stood
south of Oyster River near the Sullivan homestead.
