This is the corner of the Durham, Dover
and Newmarket Roads, opposite the Town Hall. Probably about
1900 it shows the end of the Oystershell or Pendexter Tavern.
Note the hay scales within the corner. The second house
at the left was turned around 1/4 way.
This house stands east of the Post Office.
It is dated about 1757 as the Ebenezer Smith house. The
shed in the rear was torn down, and an interior fire damaged
much of the old wood-paneling. Now an apartment house it
is owned by the Cutters, with life tenure for Elsie Brown
a war-bride of 1911.
This was Runlett's Store which was beside
the old railroad tracks and across from the stations. Runlett
was the town's grocer and took orders by telephone and delivered
groceries all over town via horse and wagon. In the foreground
is probably one of Frank Morrison's hacks, used to meet
trains and to transport college boys' dates to proms and
dances in T.Hall. Now gone, this building was moved to Ballard
Street and was known as the Tin Palace.
The Adams house on Adams Point was a fine
boarding house in the 20's and 30's, where many Boston and
New York City folks had reservations for the summer. In
spite of its popularity there was no running water, no telephone
and no electricity. The pagoda was made from supporting
posts from the third Meeting House and stood there until
1960. Here Captain and Cass Adams made their gundalow and
famous wood carvings still to be found in Sheafe wharf in
Portsmouth.
